2005 District Championship Team

Thanks for your interest in the Ed-Co Girls Golf tradition. We have been one of the more successful teams in Northeast Iowa for many years, and we hope to continue fielding a team that can compete at a high level.

Requirements for golf participation are similar to any other sport. You are expected to be at practice when it is scheduled, and to compete when the opportunity presents itself. The only way to get better is to play and practice. And---we count every stroke, no matter what!

The season is short, so we practice and play as much as possible until the season ends. Practice begins when the weather cooperates toward the end of March, and continues through the first 8-10 days of May, with the first meet early in April. Varsity players will continue play though the District tournament, and we hope through Regionals and State.

Clubs: It is best for you to have your own set of golf clubs, but if needed, we can find a loaner set for you. Sets of good, used women's clubs are hard to find, even at pro shops. Don't use men's clubs!--Only the very strongest women can swing men's heavier, longer, and less flexible clubs. A beginner set should have at least a driver, a 3-wood, and a 5-, 7-, and 9-iron along with a putter. First options to add would be (1) a pitching wedge and (2) a 5-wood. You can expect to pay $150-$200 for a good set of new beginner's clubs. As with most things, you get what you pay for--cheap clubs are usually poor quality and difficult to hit well. The golf bag is extra.

Shoes: Golf shoes are useful, but you can play decently without them. If you do not have golf shoes, wear tennis shoes with some "tread" on the sole to grip the ground when you swing. Sandals are not allowed, and going barefoot is tacky, and dangerous because of the chemicals used on the greens.

Gloves: A golf glove for your off hand (the left hand for righties) is strongly recommended--it makes a big difference in being able to hit a golf ball well! A golf glove should last well through the spring season and costs $8-10.

Balls: One new golf ball is provided for each meet, and we have large buckets of used balls for practice. Players will want to have a few extra balls in their bags for meets. For most girls, any modestly priced ball will do. You can buy good quality used balls at Wal-Mart, Target, and other retailers for $6-8 per dozen.

Softball: And finally, for those going out for softball this summer--it is very important that golfers not swing a bat during golf season. Throwing, fielding, and running are not a problem, but swinging a bat is disastrous to your golf swing. If you do work out in the softball preseason, respect your own golf game and the members of the team that are counting on you and keep your hands off the bats.
